Nagasaki's Koga dolls are considered one of Japan's three major types of clay dolls, alongside Fushimi dolls (Kyoto) and Tsutsumi dolls (Sendai). Their history is said to date back to around the 16th century.
Many of the motifs evoke the exotic atmosphere of Nagasaki, a former trading port with foreign countries. Acha's clay figurine depicts a Chinese person holding a chicken.
Currently, the 19th generation kiln owner, Kenichi Ogawa, is producing the pieces, but this particular piece is by his predecessor, Toru Ogawa (1929-2021), and is appealing for its rich expression, brushwork, and subdued matte colors.
Please be aware that this is an old toy made during the Showa era, and may have fading, dust, and dirt.
