Koga dolls from Nagasaki are known as one of the three great clay dolls in Japan, alongside Fushimi dolls (Kyoto) and Tsutsumi dolls (Sendai). Its history is said to date back to around the 16th century.

Many of the motifs exude the exotic atmosphere of Nagasaki, which was a trading port with overseas countries, and Acha-san is a clay doll modeled after a Chinese man holding a shamo rooster.

The current potter is made by Ogawa Kenichi, the 19th generation head of the pottery, but this piece was created by the previous head, Ogawa Toru (1929-2021), and is attractive for its tasteful expression, brushwork, and subdued matte colors.

This is an old toy made during the Showa period, so please be aware that it may be faded, dusty, or dirty before purchasing.
